“This is so important it should be provided for free or be subsidized or regulated,” and “there ought to be a law” are common reactions when feeling out of control in ones life. The implicit assumption is often that the government should step in. Why is this wrong?

If it would violate other people’s freedom to act on their judgment (which may not be aligned with yours), and to dispose of the fruits of their labors, then having the government step in is not the answer, regardless of how important it may seem to you and to a lot of other people. The fact that life sometimes feel out of control is not a claim check on others.
