What are some of the negative consequences of a government education system?

To a large extent, a government education system monopolizes both the financing and the provision of basic education, and it stifles innovation with its regulations. Under the control of federal, state, and local governments and boards, education gets ever more expensive even as quality falters. A welfare statist education system fails children on a massive scale, especially in low income areas. Many educators try to reform the system from within, but most lack the insight that the system itself is the problem.
