Why did the movements succeed despite often being based on mixed premises resulting in mixed results in terms of protections or erosions of individual rights?

The movements succeeded because their champions were convinced that they were morally Right. This created the moral groundswell that slowly spread throughout society, grew the base of supporters, made politicians take notice, and eventually brought us to the tipping point of legislative and judicial action.
