How do politicians take advantage of our fear and resentment?

Politicians on both the political right and left are very apt at tapping into the maelstrom of fear and resentment. They offer an overwhelmingly negative message of “sticking it to the man” (or woman or group). They offer few if any positive messages or inspiring visions. Most of them appear more concerned with their election or reelection than with the well-being of their constituents.
